Application

Naphthalene is the most important polycyclic hydrocarbon in industry, mainly used for the production of phthalic anhydride, various naphthols, naphthylamines, etc. It is an intermediate in the production of synthetic resins, plasticizers, dyes, surfactants, synthetic fibers, coatings, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, spices, rubber additives, and insecticides. The allocation of naphthalene uses varies among countries. Approximately 70% is used for the production of phthalic anhydride, 15% is used for dye intermediates and rubber additives, 6% is used for insecticides, and 4% is used for tanning agents. The United States has a large proportion of pesticides used for production, mainly for the production of carbaryl. Various intermediates can be prepared from naphthalene through unit operations such as sulfonation, nitration, reduction, amination, and hydrolysis. The application of refined naphthalene is still expanding, and the new product “superplastic material”, namely naphthalene sulfonate formaldehyde condensate, can be used as a cement additive to increase the plastic deformation of concrete without reducing its strength.
